Summertown Ward
Forming the western boundary of Summertown Ward is one of Oxford's greatest assets, Port Meadow. Sunnymead Park borders Summertown on the eastside and Beechcroft Road forms the sounthern most boundary.
At its heart, is the commerical area of Summertown. The shops here range from M&S to small independent boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants. It has no Post Office. On the Banbury Road to the east of the suburb is a row of shops. On the Woodstock Road to the west is St Edward's School. South Parade is a shopping street that connects the Woodstock and Banbury roads. Also in Summertown is Ewert House, where many Oxford University students take their examinations. Summertown is home to many elements of Oxford's broadcast media such as the studios for JACKfm (FM 106), Oxford's 107.9 (FM 107.9) and Six TV Oxford (UHF 47), as well as BBC Radio Oxford (FM 95.2) which is on Banbury Road.
The mix of housing is from large semi-detached and terraced housing to the grand detached homes and halls for graduate student accomodation.
Summertown Ward: The Issues.
The issues that are current in Summertown include the reorganisation of the highways through our district shopping centre and the character of the shopping centre as high rents are pushing out small, independent traders in favour of large chains and coffee shops - there is no longer a Post Office. The switch to Alternate Weekly Collections of our househol residual waste and recyclates has caused much anguish for many residents.
