St Mary's Ward
St Mary's is a very densely packed residential area, with mostly Victorian and Edwardian housing stock, although some new developments of flats are going up. It is one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Oxford, with the highest rate of non-white residents in the locality; a long-established South Asian, and Afro-Caribbean population, increased recently by Eastern European, Chinese and African immigrants. The Cowley Road annual carnival attracts 20,000 visitors each year. Both sides of the Cowley Road are full of shops, cafes. pubs and clubs. This colourful, popular area also houses a very large number of University students: the highest level of private renting in the city. However, St Mary's also has the highest rate of recorded crime in the city; poor air quality, the highest level of overcrowded dwellings, including too many HMOs without central heating or satisfactory hygiene facilities. Fly-tipping and unsatisfactory waste management blight the area.

St Mary's is in the worst 20% areas in the UK for health deprivation and disability Its medical facilities are still inadequate in spite long-term planning. Income deprivation within its older population group is significant.

On its western side, up the Iffley Road, the ward's main areas of green land are occupied by Christ Church sports ground and the University and the University Sports Centre.
