St Clement's Ward St Clement’s lies on the eastern banks of the Cherwell and to the west of the Cowley Road, an area that opens up in a fan shape from the Plain, south of Magdalen Bridge. On its western edge Magdalen College School and St Hilda's College are well-known educational establishments. On the east side of this busy arterial road lies St Clement's ward. St Clement’s Ward has become known for its collection of restaurants, cafes and bistros, although concern has been expressed that the area is poorly served by local food stores. One of the most celebrated views od the dreaming spires can be enjoyed from the ward’s green lung, South Park. St Clement's Ward: the issues. St Clement's ward suffers many of the problems found in St Mary's ward, but with one major difference. As it spread eastwards from the Cowley Road, a significant part of its area is public green land: South Park. Fairs, rock concerts, sports events, all add an energy and excitement for the whole of the East area. On its south-eastern border lie Oriel College sports ground, and a large area of allotments. St Clement's has the highest proportion of economically active students in the city – double that of the city's average (10.3% in contrast to 5.28%) according to the last records. It contains the highest rate of student lets. Yet it also has the lowest quality of housing in Oxford – less that 2% of wards in England are worse off statistically. It lacks primary services, such as dentists, primary schooling, and sports facilities. The Asian Community Centre at Manzil Way, and the Restore project, supporting people with mental health problems, have improved quality of life for many East Oxford residents. St Clement's has the high rate of claimants of Attendance Allowance (over 65s) in Oxford City (2005 OCCC, SSDP). In spite of many hardships, the Cowley Road wards have great potential, with strong, community-led initiatives. | ||||||||||||
