North Ward

North Ward spans the Woodstock and Banbury Roads, from Observatory Street in the south, to Farndon Road to the north, and from the Oxford Canal on the west the Cherwell river on the east. Largely domestic in character, it encompasses 1400 dwellings.

It is one of the most diverse residential areas in Oxford. It includes several University Colleges (Somerville, St Anne's, Keble, St Antony's), some of the largest housing (such as Park Town), some of the smallest (Jericho), and some of the most modern, (Rutherway). It is bordered by two of the 'lungs' of Oxford, Port Meadow and the University Parks.

The population is equally varied – many academics, students in college and digs, medical professionals, and a thriving business population, many of whom travel up to London daily.

North Ward: The Issues

But North Ward has its problems. Constant infill housing and building on flood plains creates problems. The Closure of the local Post Office in North Parade has disadvantaged the elderly particularly. The impracticalities of the alternate weekly waste collections preoccupy a wide range of residents. Far too many letting houses stand empty and there is a sizeable population of two-house owners and short-tenure international academics, reducing overall involvement in local affairs. Basic services and amenities (waste collection, visitors' parking and stores rather than restaurants) are lacking, especially in the new-build areas.

North Ward Conservatives have been running a 'Twenty's the Limit' campaign and have been lobbying the County Council for a feasibility study into the introduction of residential twenty mile per hour zones.
