St Margaret’s Ward The Ward stretches from the west bank of the Cherwell to the west bank of the Oxford Canal and from south of the eponymous St Margaret’s Road to the North Oxford Centre. It has colleges - Wolfson & St Hugh’s and college accommodation, public schools, a language school and an international college, terraced housing, new housing, grand housing and some that predates the urbanisation of the area. The area is well served by public transport, shops (except for a Post office) and is within easy cycling distance of the City Centre with all of its amenities. It is a popular place to live. St Margaret's Ward: the Issues The very popularity brings with it the risk of over development and of development that could ruin the special character of much of the ward. Vigilance on planning matters is essential. The lack of a local post office is a problem for residents, people working from home and visitors. Clearly it would be very difficult to justify subsidy for an office in Summertown. This means that alternative commercially viable solutions need to be found. This summer will see a very welcome ‘make-over’ for Summertown. If the exhibition and indeed the first manifestation of the scheme, the new lamp standards, are anything to go by the County Council will be delivering a high quality environment. But getting there seems likely to require an extensive period of one way traffic flow with the potential for gridlock at peak periods. It is important that the needs of local residents are heard and met during the work period. | ||||||||||||
