Headington Ward

Headington ward runs broadly from Headley Way in the west to Windmill Road in the East, taking in Old Headington in the North and New Headington south of the London Road.

Headington contains a mixture of housing – some fine listed buildings, a large Victorian housing stock and a range of twentieth century housing. Largely residential, the ward contains the main amenities and shops of the Headington area along the London Road.

Community based organisations are very active in the ward, with Headington having perhaps the largest number of residents’ associations within the City for any ward.

Headington Ward: The Issues
Headington has its problems. The balance of dwellings has become a significant issue in recent years, with various pressures on the area with the development of flats and multi-occupancy buildings. Planning matters and conservation of the local area is of key concern to many residents. The London Road serves as a major route in and out of the city and as such traffic and transport is of wide interest to the local community. More recently, many residents have had to put up with the introduction of an alternate weekly refuse collection and for many, the system is not working, or at best working but with perverse consequences. Street cleansing and the upkeep of the public realm has suffered badly in recent years, with some areas of the ward left without adequate cleansing, safe street furniture and with a general sense that the council has just given up on this single issue which most residents believe is an essential core service.
