Barton & Sandhills Ward.

The Barton and Sandhills Ward lies at the north eastern edge of the City of Oxford.  The ward can be divided spatially into three distinct areas: Sandhills, Barton and the part of Headington which lies to the west of London Road and north of Bury Knowle Park.

The housing stock in the ward is quite diverse with an interesting mixture of large detached houses, through to inter-war semis and new build flats.  Being close to major roads makes the area an attractive place for commuters to live.

The ward, like much of Oxford, has a very steep socio-economic gradient with substantial pockets of social deprivation.

Barton & Sandhills Ward:The Issues

Labour and Liberal mis-management of the City Council is evident in Barton and Sandhills.  The Barton Pool being a case in point, demonstrates some of the wider failings of the current Liberal administration.Opened in April 2006 after a spend of £2.8 millions, the pool is suffering from poor management.  Poorly maintained equipment, showers that do not work, lockers that cannot be used and hairdryers out of action.  No wonder that the Audit Commission says that the City Council's leisure facilities provide poor value for money.

Graffiti blights certain areas within the ward - we need a Council that recognises that environmental crime of this kind negatively affects residents of our neighbourhoods.  There should be no tolerance of graffiti. Roads in and around the ward provide foci for fly tipping and dumping, a practice that has increased dramatically under the current Liberal administration.  The Council needs to make full use of its powers and bring the inconsiderate few to book.

The poorly thought-out, new residual waste and recyclate collection services have been introduced over the last two years has created an uproar.  With the imminent introduction of food waste collections we need to make sure that all aspects of the new arrangements have been thought through.  Will proper arrangements be in place for flats and apartments this time, for example?
